Firsts fail to take chances

Matlock Baileans 1sts 0

Boots 1sts 1

After all their hard work and preparation, the league season finally got underway on Saturday with this narrow home loss.

Ironically, Matlock faced Boots, the team they had to beat at the end of last season to stay in this league.

Captain Nic Martin warned they would come out hard and in the first few minutes it was almost deja vu with Matlock nearly going a goal down.

However, Matlock started to settle down and get into a pattern of play with Deb Greer and Becky Bowmer making penetrating runs deep into the Boots’ defence.

Unfortunately, a defensive error left Dani Archer to save the penalty flick that was awarded. At this point, Matlock went 1-0 down.

Going into the second half, Matlock had 70 per cent of the possession and many goa scoring opportunities but just couldn’t find the back of the net.

Jody Carson was outstanding in defence and was awarded man of the match.

This was a disappointing start but, as coach Jamie Fleet pointed out, there were lots of positives to be taken from the performance but Matlock have got to put their chances away.
