Firsts see off local rivals

Matlock 1sts 3

Belper 1sts 0

It was Matlock’s first league match back after the Christmas break against local rivals Belper.

Matlock started off well in the first half with some great balls being fed up the wings from Jodie Carson and Joey Blackburn, which created numerous attacking chances.

Sarah Archer managed to deflect a ball that was hit from outside of the D into the bottom corner of the goal to get Matlock in front.

Matlock maintained good structure and kept the momentum of the game up.

Towards the end of the first half, Belper changed tactics and looked more promising. Matlock responded by working the ball up from the defence via Nic Martin to Sarah Archer, who slotted the ball past the keeper to give Matlock a two-goal lead.

After a motivational team talk, Matlock came out strongly in the second half and switched the ball well around the defence to progress up the pitch with pace and gain a number of short corner opportunities.

One of these saw the ball hit across the face of the goal for Alice Spencer to run in at the far post and deflect it into the goal.

Matlock managed to keep possession of the ball and ended up winning 3-0, which has positioned them second in the league, one point behind the leaders Stourport.
