Fourths are staying up

Matlock Baileans 4ths 2

Belper 3rds 1

What a difference a year makes.

Last year, the 4ths were riding high after gaining promotion and this year they were fighting to stay promoted.

This do-or-die match where the Matlock side had to win to stay up saw them start in the best possible form.

Attack after attack saw the Matlock side dictate the game with controlled attacks down the right as Donna Poplar linked well with Janice Bush but, despite some concerted attempts at goal, Matlock just couldn’t score.

Belper had their first break and attack at the Matlock goal and took their chance, slotting the ball past the Matlock keeper to take the lead.

Matlock took to the field again and, even more determined, saw some fine defensive play by Rachel Sergeant and Sarah Newbury. It wasn’t long before striker Sarah ‘Bod’ Baker slotted home a textbook goal.

Still needing a goal to win, Matlock upped their game and some superb hard hits around the pitch from Holly Smedley opened up the game, but the Belper keeper was outstanding and a draw was looking likely.

Then, in the last minute, a cross by Nina Smedley to an unmarked Bush saw her score to secure the fourths’ position in Derbyshire A division.

Special thanks go to all the supporters and Ann Bradley for umpiring and keeping control of the game.
