Fourths battle hard in losing cause

Matlock 4ths 0

Macclesfield 10

THIS was not one of Matlock’s finest performances but, facing a team of a much higher calibre, the fourths battled hard in the first half, untilt they came under constant attack from the Macclesfield side.

A goal within the first ten minutes started the onslaught with another six goals following in quick succession.

Shellshocked at half-time, the home side had to draw on its experience and a stern half-time team talk by the captain saw a much more rejuvenated Matlock side take to the pitch.

Youngsters Chloe Jones and Becky Doxey worked hard alongside the older members of team and started to play some much better hockey, especially down the right hand side with Sarah Baker and Janice Bush linking well. They had a number of shots on goal and went unrewarded.

More solid defensive work by Cath Croney, Bridget Gould and Jo Boam saw the opposition struggling to find their way forward and, with some good saves by keeper Claire Mosley, ensured that only three more goals were conceded. Joint Man of the Match went to Jones and Gould, both solid under extreme pressure.

Finally, a reminder about training for Matlock Baileans. All are welcome on Monday evenings, from 6pm-8pm at Wirksworth Astro, behind the leisure centre.
