Good display but victory eludes the firsts

Bedford 2

Matlock Baileans 1sts 1

Matlock Baileans 1sts embarked on the long journey down to Bedford on Saturday and arrived ready and raring to go for what was likely to be a vital match for them.

However, the speed and quick passing of Bedford put Matlock on the back foot, unfortunately resulting in the first goal of the game.

Unperturbed, Matlock regrouped and started to play some skilful hockey with Lisa Beacham and Claire Leach leading from the back, allowing Nic Martin to score a reverse stick goal from an extremely tight angle.

Leading up to half-time, Matlock seemed the more dominant side.

However, there were some interesting umpire decisions which saw Nicola Martin carded twice, unfairly in the view of the Matlock contingent.

And, despite Matlock defending well, they were unlucky to find themselves 2-1 down.

Further interesting umpire decisions continued and Katy Honeyman found herself once again carded. Baileans again felt that this was an unfair decision.

Matlock’s Becky Bowman and Gemma Phipps continued to press forward but unfortunately, despite a great team performance, Matlock couldn’t find a win today.
