Graeme Swann, a two time championship winner with Nottinghamshire and three times an Ashes winner with England, will form a guest speaking duo alongside legendary broadcaster Jonathan Agnew, at Trent Bridge’s pre-Ashes dinner on Monday 3 August.
Swann, who retired from cricket in December 2013, is returning to the county he served for nine years as a player to entertain guests over a fine-dining experience in the Derek Randall Suite.
The 36-year-old took 255 wickets in 60 Tests for England at an average of 29.96 and has since enjoyed success with his best-selling autobiography The Breaks Are Off, as well as commencing a career in broadcasting with Test Match Special.
While Swann’s mischief and playful humour is a new and welcome addition to the commentary box, the voice of Jonathan Agnew has been the voice of cricket on the radio for over two decades.
A seam bowler with Leicestershire during the 80s, Agnew played two Test matches for his country, but it is with the microphone rather than the ball that the 55-year-old has become famous since starting with TMS in 1991.
Agnew’s anecdotes from the commentary box include a controversial interview with Lily Allen, the famous “leg-over” conversation with Brian Johnston and the regular sparring with Geoffrey Boycott that characterises BBC cricket commentary to this day.
“This event is about celebrating the Ashes coming to Nottingham, showcasing our event facilities and marking the start of Ashes week with an enjoyable evening, featuring a pair of entertaining speakers.
“It’s always nice to welcome Swanny back to Trent Bridge. His stories and humour, combined with the renowned and respected voice of BBC broadcasting in Jonathan; it will be an entertaining combination, making for a nice evening that cricket enthusiasts will enjoy.”
