Matlock RFC under 15s kicked off the season with a fine display to beat visitors Notts Moderns 41-5.
Moderns arrived with a big pack but Matlock were much the better side.
The first try came from winger Harry Colledge after the ball was passed nicely along the backline. Matlock’s opposite winger Tom Lawrence didn’t want to be missed out and produced a 50-metre run into the corner.
Some tough upfront rugby and pressure from Matlock’s backs created a mistake by Moderns with Will Molyneux able to get a toe-end onto the ball, which bounced and nicely sat up for him to run in under the sticks, giving Sam Page an easy two-pointer.
Just before half-time, quick hands in the backs found Andrew Eastwood, who muscled his way over for a try. Page kicked the two points and Matlock were able to go in at half-time with a healthy lead.
Harry Colledge was again the first on the scoresheet after the break with a long striding run in the corner. This was followed by the only try from a forward as Rory Cookman managed to shake off two tacklers to touch down. Sam Page kicked the two points.
Moderns finally rallied with a try through the forwards’ rolling maul that was then shipped for their back row to score. The final score of the game came from Harry Boyd who nicely stepped inside his opposite player to open up a gap to score near the corner.
All in all, this was a great start to the season by Matlock. Sunday showed them that playing good basic rugby can be effective, with the forwards taking the ball forward. securing and allowing the backs to score.
