Bakewell Mannerians 1sts 34
Nottingham Casuals 21
BAKEWELL celebrated victory on Saturday when they turned in a decidedly mixed display to defeat visitors Nottingham Casuals in the Midlands Two East (North).
The first half saw Mannerians play some impressive rugby but, after the break, the gutsy visitors came more into it and Bakewell weren’t able to regain their earlier fluency.
The opening score of the afternoon came on eight minutes when Tom Crapper burst through on the wing for a try. The conversion by Will Moroney hit the post but Bakewell nevertheless had a 5-0 lead.
Mannerians were looking good and it was no surprise when the lead was extended on 17 minutes through a try from Dan Driscoll after good work by Moroney and Henry Bagshawe. Moroney converted and the lead stood at 12-0.
On the half-hour mark, this advantage was extended to 19-0 as Crapper got his second try of the afternoon. Moroney again added the extras.
This was the high point of Bakewell’s display as Casuals began to gain a hold on the proceedings and Mannerians early dominance began to drain away.
Five minutes before the break, Casuals secured a converted try to make the score 19-7 and there was just time before the break for Moroney to kick a penalty.
Looking to extend that 22-7 lead going into the second half, Mannerians spent long periods on the back foot and had their lead cut to 22-14 by a converted try.
Mannerians needed to nip this revival in the bud and duly did so when Tom Oldfield went over in the corner for a bonus-point try.
Bakewell grabbed their final score of the afternoon courtesy of a try from Ethan Bagshawe, converted by Moroney.
The last points went to Casual as their converted try made the final score 34-21.
Mannerians are next in action on Saturday at Melton Mowbray.
