Matlock Baileans 1sts 3

Burton 0

Matlock went in to this pre-league game feeling confident following a strong performance last week.

Burton were also determined to prove that they hadn’t just turned up for a knockaround.

The opposition closed down well at the start of the game and seemed to want the possession much more than Matlock.

Once Matlock had realised that this wasn’t going to be so easy, they upped their game.

An excellent cross by Nic Martin saw Sarah Archer get on the end of it as she was able to sweep in the first goal.

This didn’t seem to put Burton off and they fought back with nice play down the middle, taking an open shot from the top of the circle which was saved by keeper Dani Archer.

Matlock settled well into the second half, playing their game freely and confidently.

It wasn’t long before man of the match Sarah Archer delivered an excellent cross from outside the circle, which was buried in the back of the net by a spectacular dive from Deb Greer.

Still, Burton seemed determined to break through Matlock’s defence but were soon halted by Joey Blackburn and Alice Cundy.

Now Matlock could apply the pressure with excellent passing down both wings from Gemma Phipps and great runs from Vicki Hammond as Burton seemed to burn themselves out.

As Matlock appeared to click and to find their pre-Christmas form, Burton were unable to match the level of play and intensity, and could only watch as once again Sarah Archer broke through their defence for a one-on-one with the keeper and cheekily slotted it through her legs to make it 3-0.

Hopefully this game was good preparation for Matlock Baileans, whose first league match is on Saturday when they take on local rivals Belper.
