Local pair lead the way for Midlands in National Championships

Sarah Briggs (Matlock CC) and Ellie Smith (Fossa Racing) took part in the National Youth Omnium Championships for the first time and ended up in the top three for the Midlands.

Sarah and Ellie both competed in the U14 Girls competition in a field of 30 riders, all of whom had qualified through their various regions throughout the British Isles.

The event consisted of five different races which were held on an outdoor 500m velodrome, over a very busy day of racing which had a total of 180 riders.

The Omnium consists of a 1km time trial, an elimination race, a scratch race, the keirin (where riders are initially paced behind a Derny motorcycle), and finally a points race.

At the end of the event Ellie was 11th and Sarah 19th (first and third from the Midlands region)

Cannock Chase was the venue for the Summer Classic cross-country race event and in the U10s Matlock CC’s George Parker finished sixth.

The British Schools Cycling Association East Midlands Grass Track and Mountain bike championships were held at Whitworth Park with local youngsters representing their schools.

In the grass track the winners were: U7 boy Tom Woolf; U7 girls 1st Eleanor Gordon, 2nd Phoebe Hopkinson; U9 boys 1st Ben Mellor, 2nd Charlie Ross, 3rd equal George Parker and Tom Logan; U9 girl Lauren Lindridge; U11 boys 1st Alex Gordon, 2nd Archie Mercer, 3rd Finley Hill.

U11 girls 1st Annabel Parker, 2nd Lucy Kuszynski, 3rd Jessica Lindridge; U15 girls 1st Marianna Kuszynski.

In the Mountain Bike Championship the winners were: U7 boy Tom Woolf; U7 girls 1st Eleanor Gordon, 2nd Phoebe Hopkinson; U9 boys 1st Ben Mellor, 2nd Charlie Ross, 3rd George Parker; U11 boys 1st Alex Gordon, 2nd equal Finley Hill and Stefan Murgia; U11 girls 1st Annabel Parker, 2nd Sophie Hopkinson, 3rd Jessica Lindridge.

On Tuesday evening Matlock CC held their 10 mile time trial championships in very hot conditions. Fastest rider was Adam Kenway (Sportgrub-Kuota) with a swift 20.56, but first Matlock rider and taking the club title was Patrick Gould with 21.52 in second, with Kevin White third.

At the Mallory Park midweek road racing series in the U14 girls event, Sarah Briggs was second and Amelie Wayte third.

The Monday evening track racing at Forest Town Track was held in dry sunny conditions, and in the freewheelers racing Ben Mellor finished first in the scratch race with Tom Woolf fourth while in the handicap race Ben and Tom took first and second respectively.
