Marlin make their mark at county level

BELPER Marlin enjoyed a fantastic first stage of the Derbyshire Amateur Swimming Association 2012 county youth and age group championships sponsored by British Gas.

Swimming at the ARC Leisure Centre in Matlock, many Marlin members were looking to achieve personal best times for entry into regional and national championships.

The event was held throughout Saturday and Sunday and swimmers from all over the county attended what is one of the main events in the swimming calendar.

Marlin had an amazing first weekend with 74 top six finishes in their age groups over the six sessions.

Overall there were 196 PBs gained and at the end of the second day Marlin had clinched 32 medals - six gold, 13 silver and 13 bronze and a further 11 fourth places, 16 fifth places and 15 sixth places. The swimmers rewards were well-deserved in this long, tough weekend of swimming.

The gold medal winners should be very proud of themselves swimming against some of the top county swimmers. There were three gold medals for Fran Marshall (18) for her 100m freestyle, her 50m freestyle and her 200m freestyle.

Leah Hollingsworth (15) took home two gold medals for her 100m breaststroke and her 200m breaststroke, Johnny Altoft (18) won a gold medal for his 50m Backstroke and all made Midland times. Amy Neild (13), swam a great race to take a third place bronze Medal also achieving a Midland time on her 100m backstroke.

Silver medals went to second place winners Casper Raynard (9) for his 200m freestyle, George Henshaw (10) had a great day with silver for his 50m back, 50m breaststroke and 50m freestyle, Poppy Fisher (9) was on form for her 50m butterfly, 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke and 200m breaststroke, Maddie Shrimpling (12) for her 50m breaststroke, Robert Ainley (15) for his 200m and 100m breaststroke, Hannah Kingdon for her 100 Breaststroke, Sam Frost for his 50m Freestyle.

Bronze medals went to Poppy Fisher (9) for her 50m freestyle, Dominic Shrimpling (9) for his 50m breaststroke, Robert Ainley (15) for his 100m, 50m and 200m backstroke and 50m and 100m freestyle, Casper Raynard (9) for his 50m butterfly, Fran Marshall (18) for her 50m backstroke and Leah Hollingsworth (15) for her 100m butterfly and 200m freestyle.

Fourth, fifth and sixth places also went to head coach Mike Brett, Adam Brett, Johnny Altoft, Casper Raynard, Sam Frost, Joshua Horobin, Ryan Horobin, Amy Hewitt, Robert Ainley, Lauren Neild, Poppy Fisher, Maddie Shrimpling, Luke Meakin, Rachel Ainley, Amy Neild, Dani Hollingsworth, Hannah Kingdon, Tia Millington, Sam Frost, Connor Osin, Daniel Breeze, George Chamberlain, Leah Hollingsworth, Joshua Corne.

Head coach Mike Brett was thrilled with the start for his team, commenting: “Wow, what a start to these championships for Marlin, they swam fast and remained focused”. The Club are now looking forward to swimming this weekend’s county championships in Chesterfield.
