Matlock V were beaten 4-0 by an impressive Buxton team
Matlock started much better than they did last week against their highly-fancied opponents.
Sam Hall, Sara Gould and Janice Bush made it very difficult for Burton to move forwards.
When they did break through Liz English and Lindsay Allen were waiting to intercept the ball.
Annelise Rountree, who usually plays in midfield, also had a great debut at left-back as she showed a great awareness and control.
For once the forwards, Lucy Knowles, Ella Pressley and Sally Bradbury were engaged early on in the game and their hard work resulted in a penalty corner.
On this occasion, Matlock didn’t manage to score, but the opportunity was there and that’s progress.
As expected Burton did threaten the Matlock goal, but their four goal tally was restricted by the energetic efforts of Gaye Smedley sweeping and Charlotte Clayton in goal.
Helen Greer made a welcome return to the team after the distractions of the Rugby World Cup.
She started as a sub but was soon back into the swing of things and demonstrating her superior stick skills.
At the end of the game Matlock were happy with their performance. Last year they were conceding 10 goals in encounters with Burton so restricting them to scoring just four was pleasing. Player of the match was Sara Gould. Thanks to Anne Morgan for umpiring.
