Muddy mayhem for Matlock riders at cyclo-cross series

Members of Matlock Cycling Club were in action across many age groups for round six of the Notts and Derby Cyclo Cross League.

With the winter weather kicking in, it was a muddy waterside that in areas resembled more of a waterslide at Nottingham’s Holme Pierrepont over the weekend.

In the first race of the day, the U9s took to an already wet course with Emily Benson finishing third just ahead of Isla Woolf. Maisie Robinson was ninth with her brother Ben in 11th, Jamie Brough came 13th with Freddie Farr 16th and Isaac Falconer-White 20th.

The U12s were next with a now slightly muddy course which made for some interesting racing. Grace Longden continued her fine form with a win in the U12 girls. Libby Jackson, Gracie Day and Eleanor Gordon were 11th, 12th and 14th respectively.

Arthur Limb was best placed boy in 10th spot with Ben Mellor close behind in 12th. George Parker skidded his way to 21st and the Matlock team was completed by Tom Woolf, Danny Barr, Thomas Benson, Fraser Cummings, Gabriel Falconer-White.

The U14s followed on to the muddy course, now causing mayhem. In the U14 girls Harriet Limb took second with Annabel Parker fifth and Annabel Shunburne eighth to complete an excellent trio of top 10 finishes.

In the boys, Will Longden was fifth with Euan Patton just behind in seventh. Lewis Holmes continued his excellent season with 11th, Ben Marsh was 13th, Sam Gould 19th on his season debut, Joshua Williams 21st and Finley Hill 24th.

In the U16s Sarah Briggs was third girl and Rafael Abrahams 18th in the boys.

The veteran men were now faced with a quagmire in places on this already tricky course.

In the V45, Matt Ingram came ninth place, Andy Briggs 19th, Andy Woolf 27th and Richard Nicholson 33rd.

In the V50s, Simon Patton was ninth and Martin Holmes 25th.

In the V60s, Chris Watts finished third with Tim Kniveton ninth and Clive Bednall 10th. Stuart Gascoyne unfortunately was a DNF due to one of the many mechanical failures caused by the conditions.

In the final race of the day, Cyclocross debutant Alex Raynard finished a seventh, Ffyona Booker was second in the junior females, Cheryl Vaughan got second in the senior female.

In the V40F, Julie Parker finished seventh, Louise Glysen 11th and Jo Barnett 12th. In the V50F, Hilary Bloor was sixth.

In the senior men, Andy Vaughan was ninth followed by Chris Bottomley who rode 4 laps with a flat rear tyre to finish 13th. Rob Williams rounded off the Matlock seniors in 37th.

Round seven of the series on 12th November is at the new venue of Berry Hill in Mansfield.
