A LARGE number of swimmers from Matlock & District Swimming Club raced on Saturday in an A-grade home meet that was also attended by visiting teams from Derby Phoenix and Ilkeston.
Once again, Matlock managed to field four swimmers in many events, testament to their growing competitive standard, particularly among younger members.
This weekend’s event included competitors of all ages and young swimmers will have drawn inspiration from the standard of adult members, many of whom are still capable of competing at the highest level.
Matlock A took the match comfortably from Derby Phoenix with Ilkeston third.
In further recognition of the club’s progress, head coach Gary McCaffery is about to introduce a modest restructuring of the club’s swim squads, launching a County Squad to replace the current Intermediate Squad. Membership of the County Squad will be offered to committed young athletes between the ages of 10-14, who will be expected to train at least six and a half hours per week and represent the club at a nominated, annual series of Galas and Open Meets.
Gary McCaffery commented: “We now have sufficient strength to impact strongly in local competition and this new squad will be the vehicle to deliver the aspirations of both the club and individual swimmers”.
