THE Eyam Half Marathon produced its first new winner in five years when Wigan Phoenix runner John Morrissey crossed the line first.

He came home in 1:19:36, just under two minutes ahead of Shepshed Running Club’s Gary Burnett. Hathersage-based Jonny Wilson, of the Fat Boys Running Club, came home third with a time of 1:23:11.

They led a field of more than 400 runners who assembled for one of the country’s toughest half marathons. The gruelling race, in its 19th year, takes runners on a stunning, single-loop course with an ascent of over 1,200ft.

First lady was Laura Gibson from Totley AC in a time of 1:31:00. She was nearly three minutes ahead of Sally Hughes from Sutton Harriers. Another Totley runner, Jenny Featherstone, was third in 1:37:06.

All funds raised by the half marathon and other activities organised by Eyam Half Marathon Committee – well over £100,000 – are donated to local cancer care charities and a variety of village organisations.
