New orienteers, who have been coming to the Matlock Community Orienteering Club, put their skills into practice last weekend at a night orienteering event in Allestree Park.
Juniors John Webster and Ed Hoon and senior orienteer Christine Smith have recently joined the Matlock club and, over the last few weeks, have been trying out exercises in the dark on the land at the Dimple, behind the Arc Leisure Centre.
This stood them in good stead as all three successfully completed the Orange course of 2.4km in very respectable times, finding their controls by navigating with a map and compass, with the help of head torches. Also taking part was David Parkin, a former British Night Orienteering Champion, who has recently moved to the Matlock area. They have been coached by Judith Holt, who runs for England and recently received the Veteran Sports Person of the Year from Derbyshire Dales District Council’s sports awards.
If you would like to have a go at orienteering, then come along to the club, based at the Arc. It meets on Wednesday evenings from 6.30pm-8pm. Adults admission is £2 and it’s 50p for juniors.
The new sessions will begin on January 11. For further information, contact Judith on 01629 582325 or Viv Macdonald on 01629 734307.
