MATLOCK needed to win their final match of the season to clinch second place in the league.

Coach Jon Barry was sat on the bench moaning as usual as Matlock got off to a great start when Charlotte Horton fired the Baileans into the lead, following a thunderous penalty corner strike.

Coach Barry was still not impressed and was still moaning but a second goal came when Sarah Joyce went through in a one-on-one with the keeper and slotted the ball home.

A fantastic period of play then saw Baileans score another goal.

Lenny Beacham intercepted, passed to captain Claire Stephenson who threaded the ball beautifully through to Sarah ‘Evo’ Joyce.

Her silky skills stuffed the Saints’ keeper yet again.

At half-time, the Matlock players were on a high and second place looked to be in the bag.

They were 3-0 up but still coach Barry wasn’t happy.

In the second half, tit-for-tat goals occurred. Crafty Claire Stephenson broke the back board with a penalty corner and Maz Cowie scored a penalty stroke.

Joyce missed a sitter and coach Barry kicked the fence.

The final score turned out to be 6-3.

Goalkeeper Chris Poyser was great and the result caps a fine season for a very happy team with second place secured.

“Eeh by gum, we came second”, was the reaction of the team, who went on to celebrate with a small alcoholic beverage.

Captain Claire Stephenson would like to thank Anne Bradley for umpiring all over the county and of course her fabulous team for finishing in a record-best placing of second.

Next season, it all starts again with every team on nil points.

As a team, the players consider themselves joint top already whereas coach Barry sees them as joint bottom!
