Three members of the Wirksworth-based Derbyshire Kickboxing Academy were honoured on Sunday when special guest Tom Hibbert arrived to grade them as part of the Black Belt syllabus.

Mr Hibbert holds the post of president of the World Association of Kickboxing Organisations (GB) and was awarded the MBE for services to sport.

He is one of the most highly regarded figures in martial arts in the UK and the club was delighted to welcome him along and have him grade the students, which all involved felt was a real privilege.

Students were put through exercise and complex pad work, followed by several rounds of light contact sparring lasting over two hours.

At the end of the session, Dan Lloyd, Laura Sheldon and Donna Maycock all achieved the rank of 1st Dan.

After this successful event, thoughts now turn to a number of fighting events that the club’s students are hoping to be taking part in between now and Christmas.
