Summer games for local talent

by Brian Croasdale

Summer time is sort-out time.

When I was asked by our chairman Tony Gregory to stand as match and press secretary of the association, having done the job once before, I took it in my stride.

Let me confess immediately that I don’t know everything essential to the job, not all of it anyway.

I say this because this week is the Annual General Meeting of the league and it could be the last time I write on the Association’s behalf.

Only time will tell.

Table tennis in the Matlock area has made big strides this season and, with the emergence of the Whitworth Academy and the solid foundation of the Cromford Club, the future has not been this bright for as long as I can remember.

In a busy calendar, we have the AGM on Wednesday, the Junior draw Doubles on Friday followed by the Presentation Evening at the Whitworth Academy on Saturday.

Close on the heels of this is the start of the Summer League at both Cromford and Whitworth and both with an increase in teams.

Fourteen teams will compete at each venue for the title of Summer League Champions so it seems like little rest for the hard working Ccommittee.

June 22 is the start date for both places, which leaves very little time for people to take their holidays and have a well-earned break.

We are celebrating our 75th anniversary this year and it would be nice to think we will still be here in another 75 years but one thing I do know is that it won’t be for the want of trying.

See you next week (I hope).
