Derwent Torrents U12s hockey team produced a stunning display to win their first ever juniors county championship last weekend.

Fielding two teams, Derwent had representation in both sides of the group phase.

Whilst Derwent Rapids narrowly missed out on making the semi-finals down to goal difference, it was Torrents who made the breakthrough.

Playing in the group phase, Derwent got off to a flyer, James Smith’s late penalty beating a talented Burton side.

In their second game against Buxton, Derwent led early on through Alex Liddle before an equaliser saw the game end 1-1.

This set up a crucial, winner-takes-all game against Belper to reach the semi-finals.

Derwent produced their best hockey of the competition, Josh Beardsley’s stunning solo goal setting Derwent on the way to a 4-0 victory.

Derwent faced Burton Whites in the semi-final and ran out 3-0 winners, including a great goal from Ben Sellors.

This set up the final against holders Burton Reds.

The final was an even affair, with Derwent’s defence put to the test by Burton’s talented forwards.

But the winner came when Smith flew down the left wing and unleashed a rocket of a shot, which cannoned off the post, the rebound falling to Jack Cruise who slotted home to seal Derwent’s historic win.

Coaches Pete Lloyd and Heath Roberts said: “We are so proud of the boys. For a club of our size to win the County Cup is an incredible achievement.

“Seeing all of the lads enjoy their hockey is the most important thing.

“This win is the icing and the cherry on top.”
