Rotherham RFC U12s 15
Matlock RFC U12s 95
Having hosted Colwyn Bay only 24 hours earlier, Matlock RFC travelled up to South Yorkshire for the second stage of their busy weekend.
Had Saturday’s game drained them? Could they achieve the same levels? Quite simply yes, on both counts.
Anyone who looks at the score, over two games, might think this was a mismatch. They couldn’t be more wrong. Rotherham are a fine team with some very good individuals. More importantly, they never gave up and continued to compete until the final whistle.
Matlock forwards came to dominate the set and loose scrums against the larger Rotherham pack to provide as much ball as the Matlock backs could use.
One surprise feature was the 50/50 line-out stats, perhaps a first for Matlock.
Matlock’s back division were simply overwhelming. Strong in the run, good support and movement, this was an awesome display of attacking rugby.
In defence, they pressured the ball carrier, denying space and strong tackles all over the pitch.
Matlock’s scorers were Harvey Williams (six), Joe Smithurst (four), Connor Proffitt (three), Tom Osborn (three), Ash Cullum, Sam Doyle and Tom Drury with one each.
So, this was a great weekend’s rugby with 23 tries scored and eight conceded. More importantly, 20 players at both games and the display of the season.
The intensity shown will hold them in good stead for their tour of the West Country this coming weekend. The coaches just hope they enjoy the rest of the season as much as they can.
