THIS week heralds two important events connected with Matlock Water Polo Club.
In a break with tradition, the club is starting its tour of the West Country on Thursday, rather than travelling to Hasselt, Belgium.
Then, on Sunday, former club member and president of many years standing, Reg Smith, gets presented with a long-service award by the Nottinghamshire ASA for his contribution to Matlock, the league and the sport in general, spanning over 40 years.
Reg, who still referees and remains an active league committee member, richly deserves this accolade. The club sends its congratulations and heartfelt thanks for all he has done and continues to do.
Meanwhile, the sheer delight experienced by the children, parents and coaches associated with Matlock Water Polo Club’s recent water polo taster sessions has been followed with disappointment at not being able to carry them on for now, due to pool availability.
Coach Richard Sellors said: “Kids as young as six have attended, learned a lot and loved it. It is just the correct age to start them off for a lifetime of enjoying the game and future star players are predominantly the ones who start young. We will work with the Arc as we are both looking at obtaining a session in the future.”
Any developments will be reported in this column in future weeks.
