Jubilant John Beardsley finally got his hands on the prestigious President’s Cup at the annual presentation evening of Matlock Golf Club.
After figuring in three previous finals, but finishing runner-up, Beardsley made it fourth time lucky in 2015 to lift the club’s major trophy.
He congratulated all who had taken part in this and other competitions, and thanked everyone who worked so hard “to make Matlock Golf Club a wonderful place to play and enjoy this great game”.
More than 40 golfers received awards and trophies at the event, which was attended at the clubhouse by more than 80 members, family and friends. They were welcomed by lady captain Ian Elton and captain Ian Waite, who himself won the Sykes Cup and partnered Val Corker to take the Chairman’s Salver.
Double successes were also achieved by Tony Booth, Di Gray, Richard Giles and Graham Coppen.
As a duo, Booth and Gray won the Mixed Foursomes Thorntons Salver before Booth also took the Mixed Greensome Thornton Salver with another partner and Gray also lifted the Mixed Foursomes Cup with Gareth Johnson.
Giles won the Scratch Cup (First Division) and also the Bailey Foursomes Cup, alongside partner Phil Evans. While Coppen won the Ken Gibson Trophy for the best net aggregate over four medal competitions and also partnered Andy Taylor to land the Fourball Trophy.
Coppen almost made it a hat-trick of trophies but was thwarted by Rob Tait in the Drabble Cup final. However, he did go on to county success when making it four wins in a row in both the Derbyshire Senior Matchplay Championship and the DUGC Seniors Championship.
There was continued county success too for Matlock Ladies, who won both the Silver and Bronze Interclub Leagues.
