Matlock move
December 1955 was a historic date for Derbyshire when Alderman Charles White arrived at Smedley’s Hydro in Matlock to accept the keys and formally take possession of the premises.
It ended months of legal, and sometimes bitter, wrangling and signalled Derbyshire County Council’s move from Derby to Matlock. Pictured with notebook is Ella Smith of Coming Events, which later became the Mercury.
