Peak duo target Glasgow glory

Two sporting stars from the Peaks are braced for their Commonwealth Games’ bows when the event kicks off tomorrow (Wednesday) with the traditional opening ceremony.

Bakewell’s Annie Last and Hadfield’s Katie Byres will both be hoping that they can achieve success in Scotland during the 12-day event.

Mountain biker Annie is part of Team England’s cycling squad and she will compete next Tuesday (July 29).

The 23-year-old will be taking part in the women’s cross-country race and is one of a 31-strong cycling team.

Also competing in Glasgow will be 20-year-old Byres.

Katie will be embarking upon her first major tournament and is due to take part in the women’s pole vault qualifying rounds.

That is due to take place next Thursday (July 31) evening.
