Cannock Ladies 2nds 1
Matlock Baileans Ladies 1sts 1
A new-look Matlock side with coaches Sally Spencer and Jon Barry travelled to Cannock for the first friendly of the season.
The team started well, maintaining possession of the ball and making it difficult for Cannock in the heat.
Jode Carson controlled the centre of the pitch, distributing the ball well and exploding forward at any opportunity.
Alice Spencer and Gemma Phipps worked hard, pushing forward to support the strike force well. Cannock maintained the pressure and began pushing Matlock back into their half. A number of strong tackles from Laura Donaldson, Ruth Whittaker, Laura Boddy and Rachel Moor kept Cannock at bay until a long corner was worked into the ‘D’ for the Cannock forward to finish early into the bottom corner.
Cannock kept control and a number of good tackles from the team, and an intercepting dive from Dani Archer in goal, kept Cannock from adding any more.
Starting the second half one goal down never affected the Matlock side, who looked determined and never let their heads drop.
Sarah Joyce and Sarah Archer pushed the Cannock defence and when Archer picked up a loose ball and slid past the oncoming keeper, she was unfortunate to hit the post from a tight angle.
The team kept creating chances and gained a number of short corners, which they failed to capitalise on.
The team maintained the pressure and a goal finally came when Laura Donaldson threaded a ball through to Sarah Joyce, who passed the ball wide to Sarah Archer. Archer drew the keeper towards her and slipped the ball to Sarah Joyce, who made no mistake in firing into the back of the net.
Both teams were pushing for the win and Cannock came close with Dani Archer heading a ball clear and Rachel Moor making a crucial tackle as last man. Matlock finished the game strongly and look forward to welcoming North Notts to Wirksworth next weekend.
