Relegation fears eased

Sheffield Transport 1st XI 87 All Out (1pt) lost to Ashford in the Water 1st XI 92–2 (25pts) by 8 wickets

Ashford eased their relegation fears somewhat in Division Two of the Yorkshire and Derbyshire Cricket League with a convincing victory against fellow basement-dwellers Sheffield Transport.

Electing to bat first, to the accompaniment of a Meatloaf tribute band playing at a nearby wedding reception, Transport made a steady start with John Slack (13) and Chris Johnson (13) both making double figures.

However, with Joe Muir (2-16) bowling his usual economic line and Peter Marsden firing at the other end, the home side were soon in trouble at 29–4.

Richard Oates (31) offered stubborn resistance before falling to Phil Price (2–16). Marsden finished with figures of 5–29 with John Carrington (1–2) taking the other wicket as the home side capitulated for a disappointing 87 all out.

Ashford’s reply always looked assured as Andrew Paulett (17) and Zac Dann (43) took the attack to the bowlers.

Julian Henson (14 not out) and Price (14 not out) saw the visitors home to a comfortable victory with 43 overs to spare.

The win pushed Ashford up to eighth in the table and left Transport at the bottom with four games left to play this season.
