Blow for Matlock as key midfielder leaves club
Matlock Town received a blow last weekend when midfield dynamo Joe Doyle-Charles left to join Coalville Town.
His 100 per cent commitment and tenacious tackling won over the Matlock crowd in his two seasons with the Gladiators following his move from Alfreton Town. Doyle-Charles had previously been with Ilkeston FC after earlier being released by Burton Albion.
In a Twitter message Doyle-Charles said: “Would like to thank Matlock Town for the past two years I have spent there. All the players and staff who have been brilliant with me I can’t thank you enough, and the fans who have been class with me and my family from the start, all the best and see you soon.”
Doyle Charles lives in Leicester and cited the extra travel as a reason behind his move with him now having a young daughter.
The non-league restructure has meant Coalville being transferred to the newly formed Southern League Central Division along with a number of Midlands-based clubs who were in the NPL last season.
Matlock manager Dave Hoole was keen to hold on to Doyle-Charles but can understand why he has made the move to a club nearer home.
“We did our utmost to try and get him to stay but with his personal circumstances his decision is totally understandable,” Hoole admitted.
“It’s quite a journey for him both on matchdays and for training and Joe was up front about it from the start. Coalville’s on his doorstep and they matched what we offered him. It’s left a big hole but we’ve been on to it straightaway and we’re confident we’ll have the personnel to fill his boots.”
Hoole is happy with the way preparations for his first full season in charge at Causeway Lane are progressing.
“We’re all working tirelessly behind the scenes, we have the spine sorted and we should be stronger with the lads we have coming in.
“The hard work though will continue but Shaun (Harrad) and I are both really excited about how things are going.”
