Gladiators sign nomadic defender Jake Phillips
Matlock Town have signed defender Jake Phillips.
The 22-year-old was most recently with the Gladiators’ Evo-Stik Premier Division rivals Nantwich Town.
Phillips began his career at Tranmere Rovers where he narrowly missed out on a professional contract.
From there he joined Llandudno Town FC and during his spell with the Wings, he was part of their Huws Gray Alliance title-winning side in 2015 as a first team regular before being handed an opportunity at Sheffield United where he played for the Blades U21 side until he cancelled his contract by mutual consent.
After leaving the Blades and having a short spell with Fleetwood Town, he signed for Brackley Town whom he helped avoid relegation from the National League North.
He spent the pre-season of 2016 with Nottingham Forest but with the club going through new management, new faces where brought in and Phillips was not offered a deal.
He then spent a lot of the first part of the season training with National League clubs such as Bromley and Braintree Town, but decided to sign for Margate after offers from other National League South sides.
He played at centre-back and as a holding midfielder for Margate but due to financial reasons he left the club and signed for then-fellow National League South side Welling United.
In the pre-season of 2017, Phillips trained with various teams from National League to the Welsh Premier Division, after which he signed for Llandudno once more.
Phillips joined Nantwich Town half way through the current season and can play anywhere across the back four.
