The freezing fog and an icy cold morning did nothing to deter 34 hardy runners who took on Matlock Athletic Club’s annual Beetroot Race on Boxing Day.

This year, the race was included in the Junior Grand Prix and some outstanding performances were delivered from the youngsters.

In first place, with an excellent time of 14 minutes exactly, was Joe Curry, followed in second place by Michaela Dick in 14:05. Bronwyn Lessiter back in 15:35 took third place, while fourth place was claimed by James Briggs in 16:23.

First lady and in fifth place overall was Elizabeth Webster in 16:32, while sixth place was triumphantly secured by Joe Curry’s younger brother Alex in 16:44.

Next was Rhys Lessiter and in keeping with his excellent yearly performances he completed in 18:09, followed by a narrow margin of just nine seconds by Olivia Allen in 18:18.

The senior race was won by Luke Beresford in 27.03, just ahead of Phil Mackereth who was just five seconds behind.

Richard Bradbury (27.32), Craig Allen (27.34) and Karl Webster (28.05) made up the rest of the top five with Christine Howard first lady home in 32.37.

The Queens Head 5k road race scheduled for Saturday (27th) had to be postponed due to the roads not having been cleared of snow and therefore being a problem for runners and car drivers.

This has been rescheduled for Sunday, March 1st.
