Running: Club members keeping busy

Buxton AC’s athletes have been in action in several half marathons recently, with some fine performances recorded.

At Macclesfield, Mark Babington recorded 2 hours and 58 seconds while, in Nottingham, Steve Radcliffe finished in 1.49.56 with Helen Brunt and Hayley Errington following him home in 1.58.19 and 2.12.26 respectively.

The Congleton ‘Sting in the Tail’ Half saw new member Kevin Mottram finishing in 1.37.05, ahead of Steve Kenworthy (1.46.43).

Away from the roads, on the Tissington Trail Half, Frank Golden broke the tape at 1.43.41, followed by wife Bev in 1.54.11 and Angela Bent 1.57.20 (1st Over-60 Female).

At the inaugural Goyt Valley multi-terrain Half, Rob White was in second place at 1.33.53, with Richard Bouglas (19th) in 1.57.41, while Ros Barratt was 36th in a time of 4.38.28 for the marathon distance at the same venue.

Jason Bennett continues his fine form, traveling to Bournemouth to compete in the marathon and running the distance in three hours, 12 minutes and 35 seconds.

Son Jordan also competed and came home in 4.15.33.

Nearer to home, Dave Ryan ran 4.28.20 at the Chester Marathon.

Jon Sewell finished the Great Yorkshire 10K in 40.17, and Sarah Nicholson was timed at 52.25 in the same race.

On the fells, at the tough 21-mile Edale Skyline, Buxton had two competitors and from a field of over 300, Darran Hawkins was 64th in three hours, 30 minutes and 50 seconds, while Mark Pursell was 177th in 4.13.12, finishing despite picking up an injury in the race.

Angela Bent won the Female Vet 60 in the 2013 Outside Challenge, a series of six classic village fell races around the Hope & Derwent Valleys, an amazing result.

The cross country season is also in full swing, and the club held it’s annual race at Temple Fields, over a 4.5K course.

Steve Watson was first home in a time of 15 minutes and 19 seconds, while Rachel Chatwin was the first lady home in 17.49.

Junior Elliot Meylan was first in his category, and was a fantastic fourth overall in the race.
