Seconds hit the bottom but thirds win

Matlock second XI are now bottom of Division Five after defeat to Ambergate.

Ambergate won the toss and decided to bowl. Matlock captain Paul Chadbourne’s (63) accounted for over half of the Matlock runs in a 9 wicket total of 108. T Rouse was Ambergate’s most successful bowler with 6-34.

Ambergate needed just 24 overs to reach a winning total, losing four wickets in the process.

The third XI found it necessary to concede their Saturday Game with South Wingfield.

They were, however, able to muster a team for Sunday’s home game against Cutthorpe 3rd XI largely due to the dedication of Guy Roberts, the captain.

Cutthorpe won the toss and asked Matlock to bat only to watch Tim Jeffery score 56 runs, ably supported by junior Phil Braund (34), Steve Webster (23*) and Adrian Martin (10*) in a 46 over total of 168-5.

Cutthorpe used six bowlers of which the pick was Clive Howells with 3-25 in 13 overs.

Matlock have two mean bowlers in Andy Hawkmoon and Tim Braund.

Hawkmoon was unusually generous in 2-54 in 14 overs and Braund as tricky as ever with his spin bowling with 5-35.

Another successful bowler in Cutthorpe’s all out losing total of 132 was Jack Stevenson who took 1 for 9 and Rory Simpson (1-19) captured the last wicket for victory.

Despite this success, the future of the third XI is now the subject of review, due to inadequacy of squad numbers to support three teams.
