Seconds hold on for a draw at Langley Mill

Matlock second XI earned a losing draw at Langley Mill as they continue their battle against relegation in Division Five North.

Langley Mill targeted 27 points, won the toss, decided to bat and put Matlock to the sword, scoring 338 for 6 on a perfect batting wicket.

Ball (106) and Tullet (147) scored centuries leaving the Matlock bowling to toil in the sun, the best bowling return being that of Rob Lowe with his slow off spinners (4-82).

Andy Hawkmoon showed he could still bowl economically in Division Five, opening the bowling and taking an arly wicket.

This accumulation of runs and overs was to rule against Langley Mill by giving Matlock a real opportunity to play the draw and if successful limiting points to Langley Mill in their push for promotion.

The Langley Mill opening attack proved lively and Matlock were to lose two quick wickets, but resistance came from Mark Burton (32) and Tom Coey, making a welcome first appearance of the season.

Further resistance punctuated by elegant stroke-making by skipper Paul Chadbourne (38) and Phil Braund (31) enabled Matlock to score a creditable 158 from their 46 overs with two wickets in hand, Guy Roberts and Jack Stevenson, former third team players, batting out to earning a very welcome seven points from the losing draw and perhaps leaving Langley Mill regretting a failure to make a declaration.

The battle to avoid relegation by both Matlock teams continues but the second XI have no fixture this weekend due to the earlier withdrawal by Pilsley.
