Belper Amateurs CC 1st XI 172-2 beat Matlock 2nd XI 171 all out by eight wickets
Matlock looked to reignite their promotion campaign against an experienced Belper Amateurs side on Saturday in Division 5N.
The hosts bowled Matlock out for 171 on a decent pitch on which boundaries should have been much easier to come by.
Matlock were asked to bat first, were up against it from the start and soon found themselves in trouble as the seamers got in among their top order, reducing them to 34-4.
Matlock were never really in the hunt despite a defiant 65 from the ever-impressive Luke Pressland who punished any lacklustre bowling.
But it was Tom Coey who caught the eye and made a very useful 43 not out in the middle order to enhance his batting credentials and dig Matlock out of a hole.
Matlock’s total never really recovered from the loss of early wickets and they had to battle their way to 171 before Spencer returned late on to take 3-57.
With Andy Ogden missing, Matlock’s challenge was always going to be a tough ask. In reply, Luke Pressland picked up two wickets to give Matlock some hope, but their challenge petered out when Belper captain O Deeming made 55, ably supported by J Kington (50*) and F Watson (41), both not out at the end, with the hosts passing their target with ten overs to spare and inflicting another painful defeat on the young Matlock side.
