Spirits still high despite double loss

by Colin Ingley

Two heavy defeats in the space of one week to Leander and Southwell have failed to upset Matlock Water Polo Club members too much as progress is still believed to be taking place.

Coach Richard Sellors was honest about both games.

He said: “The Leander away game on Wednesday was at a new all deep pool against a strong and well organised side.

“The home game to Southwell on Sunday was experimental and geared towards our semi-final against them in four weeks’ time.

“Neither match involved our strongest team and the experience gained by our younger individuals is invaluable.”

The 24-5 loss in midweek was compounded by the permanent exclusion of Andy Massey which could mean up to a three match ban.

The 22-3 home reversal at the weekend involved a swopping of tactics in each quarter and at least two quarters each for newer players.

Richard Massey scored four of the eight achieved over the two games. Mike Glancy had his best game yet for Matlock in the Southwell encounter.

The club now has a two-week break before playing Southwell again in the away league fixture.
