Sporty pupils prepare for Derbyshire School Games

Up to 1,000 young people from across Derbyshire will bid to run, jump, throw, bat, bowl and cycle their way to victory at the 2016 Derbyshire School Games Event on Tuesday, July 5.

Around 800 schoolchildren between the ages of seven and 14 from qualifying schools will come together to compete at Mount St Mary’s College, Spinkhill.

Another 200 are expected to volunteer as young leaders, assisting organisers and teachers to deliver the events across 12 events and nine different sports.

The Derbyshire School Games is an exciting, fully-inclusive competition for children in England designed to motivate and enthuse young people to take part in more competitive school sport.

“The Games is not just about the competition - they will all also be having a great time, ably assisted by the young leaders helping out,” said Derbyshire Schools’ Sport Association’s (DSSA) John Barker.

“The young people get a huge amount out of taking part… the confidence and self-esteem, the growth as people and the pride in representing their school and district.

“There’s also a huge sense of teamwork, co-operation and determination, which if they take back into their schools means they are going to do really well in their school work as well.”

The Derbyshire School Games is delivered by County Sports Partnership (CSP) Derbyshire Sport in conjunction with the 10 School Sport Partnerships across Derbyshire, the schools themselves and a selection of other partners.

This year’s opening ceremony will see Derbyshire School Games singing competition winners, High Peak’s Gamesley Primary School, perform their original piece Extraordinary.

They beat off competition from 13 other schools to emerge victorious, with Wilsthorpe Community School (Erewash) and Dronfield Junior School (North East Derbyshire) highly commended.

Like last year, Jim Fearn, from Derbyshire Dales District Council, will act as compère.

Mount St Mary’s College, who first hosted the School Games in 2014, are delighted to be bringing the sporting extravaganza back to the north of the county.

Cross Campus Director of Sport, Ben Micó, said: “We are really looking forward to welcoming so many talented young sports people back here to compete at the same time.

“We are blessed here with the facilities we have, particularly with the athletics stadium, so it’s a privilege to be staging Derbyshire’s flagship school sports event that is the culmination of an academic year’s worth of keen competition.”
