Young sports stars are in the spotlight

YOUNG sports stars from the Belper area will be celebrated later this year at the Derbyshire Schools’ Sports Association Sports Awards.

A glittering ceremony will be held to honour the sporting successes of school pupils from across the county, with recognition given to those who have excelled in school sport or sport outside of school, and nominations for the event are currently being welcomed.

The event is organised by the Derbyshire Schools’ Sports Association (DSSA), and is a chance to mark the achievement and determination of the county’s best young talent, including young people with a disability, in a wide range of sports.

It is also a chance for the DSSA to thank its most dedicated student and adult volunteers.

Schools, sport and area associations are invited to nominate individuals and teams from primary, secondary and special schools in the following categories: Individual Achievement, Team Achievement, Student Volunteer, Adult Volunteer.

More information about the awards can be found at www.derbyshiressa.co.uk where nomination forms can also be downloaded.

Chairman of DSSA Suzanne Meehan said: “This has been another great year for school sport in Derbyshire and it is important that we recognise talented young people, celebrate their achievements and encourage them to future success.

“These awards are also a way of saying thank you for the hard work and commitment of some of the dedicated student and adults volunteers involved in sport, without whom many of the sporting opportunities enjoyed by young people in our schools would not be possible.”

The closing date for all nominations is Friday, June 17.

Pupils attending any school with Derby and Derbyshire are eligible to be nominated, including those who were nominated last year.

The eighth annual DSSA Sports Awards will take place on Thursday, September 29, in Derby.
