Chance for kids to get writing this summer

Westfield Derby has launched a writing competition for local youngsters during the summer holidays.

Aspiring young writers could see their efforts rewarded with some great prizes as part of a new story writing competition for children.

The shopping centre is encouraging youngsters across the region to put pen to paper over the school summer holidays as it appeals to those up to aged 16 to get creative and write an original short story using the theme ‘under the sea.’

Budding writers will be able to enter one of two categories – aged under 8s and aged 8-16 – by submitting a maximum of 500 words to the centre by email via, or by handing it in at the concierge desk at Westfield before 5pm on August 31. Name and age should be included with the entry, as well as adult contact details.

Lucky entrants will be rewarded for their efforts with prizes on offer for those in first, second and third place in each category. Prizes include a LeapPad for the winner of the under eights category, and a Kindle for the 8-16s.

Nigel Wheatley, senior centre manager at Westfield Derby said: “We’re very enthusiastic about keeping kids and young people creative over the holidays and this is a great opportunity for budding writers to let their imaginations do the work.”
