Screening for arts project

An ambitious project by Derby arts centre involving 15,000 people will conclude with a premiere screening as Part of Derby Festé later in September.

Derby Soap Opera, Quad’s mass participation film project, was a project by the international artist and director of photography Marinella Senatore and took place in Quad and around the city earlier this year.

The final film, entitled Rosas II: The Attic, will have a premiere screening at Festé on Thursday, September 20.

People were invited to become the actors, singers and dancers, stage directors, costume designers, make-up artists and lighting technicians for Derby Soap Opera, created in Quad and on location in Derby between February and July.

Rosas II: The Attic for Quad is a 36-minute film that is part of an international trilogy of community centred operatic film works. The other two parts of the trilogy were made by Marinella Senatore with Matadero Madrid in Spain, and the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin, Germany.

The Rosas project has resulted in thousands of citizens in three European cities coming together to make a series of films that will tour the world, being screened at galleries and film festivals.

Each film tells a different story, a story that was generated by local participants. For example, the story for the Derby leg of the trilogy involves a mysterious stranger from Germany returning to Derby, the place of his British father’s birth – to reveal a dark and disturbing secret – played out in The Attic of and old Derby school during a school reunion.

The three organisations involved in the project also collaborated: an actor from Berlin was sent to Madrid and Derby to become a part of each film, whilst two co-directors spent a week in Madrid contributing to that leg of the trilogy.

The screening of Rosas II: The Attic will take place in Derby Assembly Rooms, as part of Festé, on September 20 at 7pm, doors will be open from 6pm and speeches will take place at 6.30pm.
