Enjoy concert in the open air

THE hugely popular annual Darley Park Concert is to take place this year on Saturday, June 30, from 8pm.

As ever, the concert will be in the spectacular surroundings of Darley Park, Darley Abbey, Derby.

There will be fabulous music and fantastic fireworks in the company of the region’s only professional orchestra, sinfonia ViVA.

Presented by Classic FM’s morning show host John Suchet and with an amazing firework finale, come along and be part of the 30,000-strong crowd.

John Suchet explained: “Everyone at Classic FM is delighted to team up with Derby LIVE once again to present the spectacular Darley Park Concert. It is a genuine privilege for me to

host this acclaimed event and I look forward to a wonderful evening of classical favourites in a truly superb setting.”

This year, Conductor James Holmes and sinfonia ViVA will be joined by sensational vocalist Mary Carewe, whose versatility ranges from musical theatre and cabaret songs to contemporary music.

The 2012 programme is all about celebrating - the theme takes in weddings, anniversaries, holidays, vocational and sporting successes - with toe-tapping pieces to get everyone in the mood.

Orchestrally, in the first half there’s Walton’s stirring Crown Imperial March, Mendelssohn’s ever-popular Wedding March, Wagner’s energetic dance theme from Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Grieg’s much-loved, lyrical Wedding Day at Troldhaugen plus string maestro Mantovani’s Holiday for Strings and the infectiously bouncy rhythms of Gershwin’s Strike up the Band Overture.

After the interval and the sprightly Polonaise from Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin sets the scene for a section on athletic endeavour with Vangelis’s dramatic and unforgettable title theme from Chariots of Fire, a celebratory fizzy Champagne Polka by Johann Strauss, leading to the ultimate modern song of victory, Queen’s We Are The Champions and a suitably upbeat conclusion for the firework finale, the Polovtsian Dances by Borodin.

“In this year of mass celebrations ViVA is delighted to put together a programme of music to mark all

occasions. Following her star turn last year Mary Carewe is back with her unique selection of show

stopping tunes. Our very own ‘Mr Darley Park’ James Holmes is back to conduct the orchestra and hold the

performance together. It is a real pleasure to welcome John Suchet from Classic FM to host the evening.

John’s daily radio show is a top favourite on the station and it is great that he is bringing his own

approach to classical music to “one of the country’s largest free outdoor concerts”. (Peter Helps, Chief

Executive of sinfonia ViVA)
