The Sorcerer, Gilbert & Sullivan’s first full-length success will be performed by the young and vibrant Oxbridge Opera Company at Buxton Opera House this week as part of the venue’s celebration of G & S.
All the features found in G & S’s later collaborations are contained in The Sorcerer, together with some of the finest melodies that Sir Arthur Sullivan ever wrote.
The piece is based on a Victorian Christmas tale The Elixir of Youth that WS Gilbert wrote for The Graphic magazine in 1876.
The story starts when a mysterious magic salesman brings a love potion to a rural village and people of all classes are powerless to its effects, with hilariously controversial results.
Oxbridge Opera Company has produced acclaimed productions of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas for four years.
Their production of The Sorcerer uses Sullivan’s full original orchestration and treats audiences to some of the finest young professional singers in the country
The Sorcerer will take place on Friday and Saturday (August 8-9). Tickets are £20 and £23. Call the box office on 0845 127 2190 (Photo by Jake Randall)
