Starr turn at tribute concert

An Edwin Starr Memorial Concert is to take place at Beeston Youth and Community Centre (The Shed) on Saturday, April 12, from 7.30pm.

This will be an evening of entertainment in celebration of Nottingham’s favourite adopted soul son, commemorating the anniversary of his death. The gig features The Edwin Starr Band aka The Team, featuring Angelo Starr, and special guest CJ Jackson.

Born in Nashville, USA in 1942, Edwin Starr spent the final years of his life thousands of miles from the Motown heartland of Detroit, passing away in April 2003 in his hometown of Bramcote, Nottingham.

Rightly revered for the storming protest classic, War (1970), Edwin Starr didn’t really need another hit to achieve legendary status in soul circles, so electrifying was that single performance.

A hero on England’s Northern Soul circuit, Starr continued to give astonishing live shows right up to his death at the age of 61 and with his exhilarating band The Team.

On Saturday, in a fitting tribute, Beeston Youth and Community Centre (affectionately known to locals as The Shed), will play host to a celebratory evening of the life and music of Starr and what better person to lead the celebrations than Edwin’s younger brother, Angelo, a singer and multi-instrumentalist in his own right, Angelo has fronted The Team since Edwin’s death. In a not-to-be missed show, Angelo will lead the tributes, re-living Edwin’s hits, soul and motown classics as well as material from the band’s album Keeping the Faith. Special guest for the evening is ex-Drifters singer and Man of Soul CJ Jackson.

“The fans were always very kind with their praise for Edwin and indeed for The Team during our many years as his live band. In fact, it was their suggestion that The Team should continue Edwin’s legacy since we’d always been such a large part of the overall show. Perhaps because I would sometimes get called forward to perform a song or two in Edwin’s show, it ultimately lead to our decision that I would ‘step forward’ to front The Team rather than drafting in someone new”, said Angelo.
