Top trumpeter Alison returns

TOP British trumpeter Alison Balsom joins forces with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra for a performance at Nottingham’s Royal Concert Hall on Wednesday, May 4, from 7.30pm.

The concert, to be conducted by Vassily Sinaisky, will begin with a performance of three of Dvorak’s vibrant Slavonic Dances, followed by Hummel’s Trumpet Concerto with Alison Balsom’s eagerly-awaited appearance. The piece will provide the perfect showcase for Alison’s virtuoso playing.

The second half features arguably the most popular and widely-performed offerings from Mahler’s cycle of symphonies. His First Symphony begins with distant fanfares and the sounds of nature, includes cheerful folk tunes, a funeral march based on Frere Jacques and ends with a blazing, brassy conclusion where the composer instructs the large horn section to play while standing.

There will be a pre-concert talk on the symphony by Benjamin Ellin, starting at 6.30pm.

Tickets to see Alison Balsom and the BBC Philharmonic in action are £10-£32.
