Buxton Opera House has a flagship programme for young people aged between 5 and 25 years, namely the Buxton Opera House Young Company. Membership is open to all young people and it provides them with a wide range of activities and opportunities whether they wish to participate, produce, promote or perform.
Their latest production, which is currently running at the Pavilion Arts Centre adjacen to Buxton Opera House, is Gargantua by Carl Grose.
This has an entertaining story line in which Mr and Mrs Mungus have a baby which turns out to be a monster baby with accelerated growth and an appetite for anything that moves.
Scientists try to clone the baby but he escapes....
One of the biggest challenges is that the baby grows throughout the performance. Credit must go to Tayler Skinner the designer who has created an amazing baby (the audience shrieked in delight when the giant baby appeared at last night’s performance).
A mention must also go to stage manager Emma Furness who is clearly a very talented young professional.
Viewers both young and old clearly enjoyed themselves! It was a pleasure to see such an amazing and ambitious young cast. The audience was thrilled by its skill, creativity and commitment.
Catch Gargantua at the Pavilion Arts Centre until Saturday, March 5.
