Buckle up for more top theatre

DEparture Lounge, Derby Theatre’s summer festival of fresh, new and exciting theatre, returns to the venue - and other unusual places around the city - from July 17-20.

Buckle up once again for a wonderful theatrical rollercoaster ride of top-class touring theatre, quirky and contemporary productions, Sunday site-specific shows, an Edinburgh pick and mix, plus much much more.

At this year’s festival, Derby Theatre will also officially launch In Good Company, a professional development programme for artists making work in the East Midlands.

Funded by Arts Council England, it is delivered by Derby Theatre, Create in Mansfield and Embrace Arts in Leicester. This brand new programme will engage a community of regional artists and Associate Companies through masterclasses with top practitioners, scratch nights and networking events.

Sarah Brigham, artistic director at Derby Theatre, said: “This is an exciting next stage for Departure Lounge – bringing more top quality and innovative theatre to Derby.

“My personal highlights are The Alternative World Cup, which fuses high octane dance with freestyle football and Early Doors, a great night of storytelling and drama in your local pub.”

Natalie Ibu, creative producer of In Good Company, added: “Launching In Good Company at this year’s festival will build on last year’s commitment to showcase the best contemporary work - from home and away - and asking audiences to go on an adventure with us, we match it this year with a dynamic artist development programme that encourages artists to make us their artist development home.

“We will welcome some of the UK’s leading practitioners to share their stories, practices and experience with us, and each other, through masterclasses, salons and surgeries. Artists can enjoy one -on-one dramaturgical sessions, scratch work in an open-mic night for new plays or simply come and be in good company together to commune, converse and collaborate.“
