Drama group in WW1 tale

Drama buffs in Alfreton are turning back the clock for their latest production.

The new play Love & War is the Easter choice by the drama group at Alfreton Wesley Church.

The three-act drama, which has a cast of seven, is being staged on Wednesday and Thursday, April 16 and 17, at 7pm.

It is 1914 and two rookie soldiers set off to fight for their country – while their families face fear and foreboding as tragedy threatens both at home and overseas.

Producer David Hopkinson said: “The play is a fitting choice for our Easter production as we mark the centenary of the outbreak of World War I.

“It looks at the effect of the war on the people back home, as they struggle to cope amid their concerns for their sons serving overseas. But it’s not all doom and gloom – there’s humour as well as drama.”

The play will be part of an evening of worship for Holy Week, which will also include Passiontide music and will close with Holy Communion.

Admission is free and there will be a collection for the Methodist Relief and Development Fund, which swings into action when tragedy strikes in various parts of the world.
