Playhouse’s tale of hero worship

Nottingham Playhouse Theatre Company will be presenting the world premiere of My Judy Garland Life, from Friday, January 31-Saturday, February 15.

It is written by Amanda Whittington and takes you deep into the joy and heartache of hero worship.

Based on the autobiographical memoir of author Susie Boyt, My Judy Garland Life tells the story of growing up under the star’s spell.

Enthralled as a child by the passion and pain of Garland’s voice, the troubled star becomes someone Susie can confide in, care for and be consoled by. Judy’s heart-stopping blend of joy and anguish helps Susie with her own personal troubles, ultimately bringing her through her darkest days.

Cast in the role of Judy Garland is musical theatre star Sally Ann Triplett. A Judy Garland fan herself, Sally Ann has appeared in numerous West End productions including Cats, Chicago and Guys and Dolls.

Commenting on the role, Sally Ann said: “I always knew I wanted to perform from a very early age and my parents would sit me down in front of the telly any time an MGM film was on, so my love for Judy began a long time ago.”

Nottingham Playhouse in partnership with Fifth Word Theatre will be presenting another of Amanda Whittington’s plays - Amateur Girl - in the Neville Studio from February 3-8. Based on real-life stories, Amateur Girl is a hard-hitting, poignant yet wryly amusing play about the reality behind the fantasy business.
