Get ready for a trip back to 1920s Chicago when Heanor Musical Theatre Company’s youth theatre group Rising Stars performs that popular musical Bugsy Malone.

The production will be taking place at Heanor Gate Science College from Wednesday, May 29, to Friday, May 31, at 7.15pm each night.

The youth theatre group was established in 1996, and this is the second time that they have performed this lively show, which is based on events in Chicago during the Prohibition era.

It is a classic gangster story but with all of the parts played by children and was filmed in 1976 by director Alan Parker, with a cast that included the likes of Jodie Foster and Bonnie Langford.

There is a cast of 25, ranging in age from nine to 17 and the challenge is that many of the youngsters are having to play several parts, with many costume changes.

It features lively songs, including Fat Sam’s Grand Slam, good dance routines, colourful costumes and battles with splurge guns.

The production team for this production of Bugsy Malone is director Stacey Crowe, choreographer Victoria Palmer and musical Director Charlotte Daniel.

Theatre company chair Janet Newton, who was one of the founders of the youth group back in 1996, commented: “This is a challenging production for the children, but they have been working hard in rehearsals and it promises to be an entertaining show suitable for all the family.

“It’s been so encouraging to see the quality of performances over the years and many members have gone on to follow performing arts careers or to appear in other amateur shows.”
