The award-winning Gatepost Theatre Company will be presenting their latest show, Godspell, in Derby this week – and are putting their own unique twist on this enduring classic.

This interpretation will be brought to you from the good ship Godspell, with the cast splicing the main brace as a cut-throat band of pirates, being enlightened by the good Captain Jesus.

This immensely successful rock opera was first produced on Broadway in 1971. Based on the Gospel according to St Matthew it deals with the last days of Jesus, and includes dramatized versions of several well-known parables.

And yet it is something more - a religious experience, a demonstration of joy, and a celebration of the family of man. The cast were originally conceived as clowns, improvising scenery and costumes, and using many well-known theatrical devices, pantomime vaudeville and varied musical styles to interpret one of humanity’s greatest events.

Opting for a lighter yet more devout approach than its thematically similar Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell features an equivalent number of hummable hit songs, notably Prepare Ye (The Way of the Lord), By My Side and Day by Day.

Godspell features Richard Pearson as Jesus and Luke Grainger as Judas, with musical direction from Kate Baker. The company will also be joined on stage by 15 children from Crich Junior School performing alongside them in the various parables and musical numbers.

Godspell will be presented from Wednesday through to Saturday, July 9-12, starting at 7.30pm, with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets are now on sale at

Gatepost Theatre Company has a varied age range of performers and has been performing together for more than 12 years and are currently celebrating their recent success in the NODA (National Operatic and Dramatic Awards) were they received the award for Best Youth Production for their 2013 production of The Wedding Singer.
