Still plenty of family fun to be enjoyed

There is still time to catch some of the professional pantomime productions running in the area.

At Derby’s Assembly Rooms, Jack And The Beanstalk is the latest production from Paul Holman Associates and it can be seen there until Sunday, January 5.

Starring Cheryl Fergison (EastEnders and Your Face Sounds Familiar) as Spirit of the Beans and Marcus Collins (X-Factor finalist) as Jack, the panto also features the return, for a third year by popular demand, of Mike ‘Squeaky’ McClean as Simple Simon and a first appearance for Don Maclean (Crackerjack and Songs of Praise) as Dame Trott.

Poor Dame Trott is down on her luck and her daydreaming son Jack is no help at all. When Jack is sent to market to sell their beloved cow Daisy, he comes home not with money – but a handful of beans! But things aren’t always as they seem and soon their luck is on the up and up.

Packed with everyone’s favourite pantomime characters, this enchanting and spellbinding tale combines jokes galore, fantastic dance routines and lots of audience participation - all of which make our pantomime a festive family favourite.

Over at Derby Theatre, Horrible Christmas runs until January 11 and is spin-off by Terry Deary from his hugely successful Horrible Histories books and TV programmes - but with a decidedly festive theme.

When young Watson spots a man who appears to be Santa Claus making off with all his presents on Christmas Eve, he follows him back through the ages with his trusty sidekick Sherlock ‘Shirley’ Holmes to help save Christmas.

Along the way he meets many famous historical figures.

Nottingham Playhouse features Kenneth Alan Taylor’s 30th and final appearance as the Dame in a panto at the venue.

The latest production is Jack and the Beanstalk and runs until January 18 (see the review on page 20.)

Last, by certainly not least, is Peter Pan, which features an all-star cast at Nottingham’s Theatre Royal.

Starring as Captain Hook in this adaptation of JM Barrie’s famous tale of the boy who never grew up is none other than Baywatch and Knight Rider star David Hasselhoff.

Alongside him are Blue Peter presenter and kids’ TV favourite Barney Harwood, not to mention Nottingham’s very own Hi-De-Hi comedy legend Su Pollard in this enchanting family tale.

You can see Peter Pan at the Theatre Royal until January 12 and ticket details are available by calling the box office at the Royal Centre on 0115 9895555.
